On September 5, President Trump signed an Executive Order, “Restoring the United States Department of War,” seeking to rename the Department of Defense. Joyce Vance, co-host of the Insider podcast and Stay Tuned contributor, speaks with historian Heather Cox Richardson. They discuss the history and symbolism behind the name change and what it reveals. Plus, the influence of Nazi German political philosopher Carl Schmitt on many in Trump’s inner circle, including Peter Thiel, Curtis Yarvin, and Vice President J.D. Vance, the prospect of “soft secession” or “functional federalism,” the far right’s view of liberal democracy, and more.
