Trump Deploys Troops to LA

California sues Trump and Kilmar Abrego Garcia indicted

On a new episode of the Insider podcast, Preet Bharara and Joyce Vance discuss:

– President Donald Trump’s deployment of the National Guard and the U.S. Marines amid protests in Los Angeles over ICE activity in the area;

– California Governor Gavin Newsom’s lawsuit against the Trump administration over the president’s federalization of the National Guard; and

– Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s return to the U.S., where he now faces criminal charges for allegedly smuggling immigrants into the country.

A NOTE FROM THE PRODUCER

Jake Kaplan is a lawyer and Supervising Producer at Stay Tuned with Preet.

The major news on everyone’s minds this week: President Donald Trump has deployed the National Guard and U.S. Marines to Los Angeles—where people have been protesting ICE activity in the area—without a request from Governor Gavin Newsom.

This is not just controversial, it is historic. It marks the first time since 1965 that a President has deployed a state’s National Guard without consent from the state’s governor. In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson federally deployed the Alabama National Guard to protect civil rights demonstrators during the Selma to Montgomery marches. In the current instance, Newsom has fiercely opposed Trump’s deployment of troops in LA and filed a lawsuit against the administration.

In a new episode of the Insider podcast, Preet and Joyce discuss what this deployment means, what legal authority it relies on, and what could come next. This moment matters, and it could be one of the defining, and most dangerous, abuses of authority of Trump’s presidency. As Preet said on the podcast, “It is a fundamental, basic cornerstone of American democracy that our military doesn’t—except in exceedingly rare circumstances set forth in law—get involved in domestic criminal law enforcement.”
